Where can I find modern jazz tracks with engaging harmonic progressions?

I’m trying to get into more modern jazz, but every playlist I find is either too chaotic or just feels like background music. How do you find that sweet spot where the music is actually engaging? I heard one track with a really compelling harmonic progression recently, but I don’t know where to go from there.

I started with one modern jazz track that hooked me, slowed it way down, and tried to map the chords by ear. It helped me spot textures beyond the mood.

I kept chasing a vibe in playlists and it felt chaotic, so I switched to a dozen more intimate trio records and listened for space between the players.

When I found a track with a strong harmonic move the bass and piano talking over the drums, I followed those players and listened for similar phrasing on other records.

One afternoon I set the room lights low and gave a single album a long focused pass three times in a row. The same ideas kept returning.

Maybe the real problem is not the tracks but whether you want the music to be a puzzle to solve or a conversation to listen to, what do you think?

If you want one concrete action I would try finding a favorite harmonic moment and search for other pieces by the same pianist, you might stumble on a whole scene you enjoy.
