Who should get permanent vs temporary codes on a smart lock?
#1
I just bought a new smart lock and I'm realizing I have no idea who should get a permanent code versus a temporary one. My partner, obviously, but what about the weekly cleaner or my neighbor who checks on the cat? I'm worried about giving out too many permanent digital keys.

We split access this way: my partner keeps a long term code, the cleaner and the neighbor get temporary codes that disappear after the week. It helps because we aren’t handing out a single key forever.

I tried giving the cleaner one code that never expired, then I kept thinking about who used it. Now we rotate codes weekly and watch the access log.

The neighbor checks on the cat and I asked for a windowed code, but I keep forgetting to disable it after the visit. I set a reminder and try to switch it back right away.

Is this really about trust, or are we chasing a solution to a problem that isn’t there?
