Why are microtransit wait times so random for my last-mile commute?

I’ve been trying to use my city’s new on-demand microtransit service for my last-mile commute from the train station, but the wait times seem completely random. Sometimes a van is there in five minutes, other times the app shows it’s twenty minutes away even during what should be an off-peak period.

I had something similar last month. one day the van pulled up in about five minutes, another time it said twenty minutes during what felt like off‑peak. it mostly seemed random, like the system was batching trips behind the scenes or reassigning drivers as they came free.

A friend suggested maybe there aren’t enough drivers on the road, so the app ends up juggling pickups and giving you a best guess that swings as the fleet shifts. I asked support once and they said ETAs are a live feed from the fleet, but that doesn’t stop the swings for me.

I actually kept a small log for a week. half the rides showed 7‑12 minutes, the rest jumped to 25‑30 minutes even with the same train time and same stop. I tried booking a few minutes earlier and even tried a nearby curb, but nothing really stabilized.

I keep wondering if the problem is the data feed or if the real issue is something else like where the pickup pin lands on the map or curbside throughput. Do you know how they calculate the ETA?
