Why did the fantasy blockbuster's box office fade after opening weekend?

I just saw the final domestic total for that big fantasy movie and it’s barely clearing $150 million. Given its massive budget and marketing, I expected it to be a surefire hit, but the legs just weren’t there after the opening. It makes me wonder if the audience for that genre is finally getting tapped out.

I looked at the domestic numbers too. Opening weekend wasn’t bad for a fantasy epic, but the legs were soft. The second and third weeks barely moved, which kind of surprised me given the budget and marketing push. It feels like the buzz didn’t translate into repeat theatergoing.

Maybe the audience for that genre is getting tapped out, or maybe this film just didn’t click emotionally with folks. I know a few people who said the trailer looked cool but they never bought a ticket once the reviews rolled in.

I tried comparing it to a similar big fantasy in the same season last year. That one kept better pace week after week, even with similar marketing. It’s tough to say if it’s a trend or just this one movie’s misfire.

Is the problem the film, or is the release calendar just too crowded these days?
