Why did the fantasy movie's domestic total drop after the opening weekend?

I just saw the final domestic total for that big fantasy movie and it’s way lower than the early tracking suggested. I was really expecting it to cross a much bigger milestone based on its opening weekend and the marketing push. What happened in those later weeks to cause such a steep drop-off?

Yeah I saw the same pattern. Opening weekend looked big, then the legs dropped fast. A lot of the push felt cosmetic, and once people saw it, word of mouth wasn’t strong enough to keep crowds coming back. Weekdays stayed light, and families moved on to other options. I’m not sure the story or runtime helped either.

I went to a second weekend show and felt the crowd was mostly fans chasing the visuals, not new viewers. The theater was far from full; the lobby chatter matched the numbers—great opening but thinner crowds afterward. The film probably didn’t give many reasons to see it twice quickly.

To me it smells like front loaded marketing and then a soft hold. The tracking assumed stronger word of mouth, but once critics and late buyers weighed in, the gravity didn’t pull. Also competition from a couple other big releases and streaming chatter probably kept people away, since after the initial buzz lots of folks wait for home viewing.

One time I watched the ad cadence and it felt like they leaned into world building but not clearly why it mattered. I wonder if the real problem was marketing or the movie’s center, but either way the numbers show a big opening and weak follow-through, with the mid weeks getting quieter.
