Why did the Windows 10 feature update fail and roll back on my computer?
#1
I just tried to update my main Windows 10 PC to the latest feature update, and the whole process failed and rolled back. Now I'm stuck on the old version and the update assistant just gives me a generic error code. Has anyone else hit a wall with this specific update recently and figured out what went wrong?

Yep, I hit this last month. The feature update started, droned on for a long time, then rolled back to the old build with the same vague error from the update assistant. I tried the troubleshooter, then cleared the SoftwareDistribution folder, disabled antivirus briefly, and restarted the update service. Nothing stuck, so I grabbed the latest feature update ISO and did an in place upgrade. It finally finished after a couple of restarts, but that weekend was a mess.

I left it alone for a day, tried again with the Media Creation Tool, got to the same stage and stalled again. It kept showing that generic error. I ended up rolling back and waiting to see if a later update would play nicer with my drivers.

My hunch was a driver slip or a BIOS/firmware quirk. I checked Device Manager after the rollback and nothing flagged, but after a clean install the machine seemed steadier with the new drivers. Maybe the servicing stack update was the real blocker, or something in the update chain blocked the installation.

Has anyone checked if the PCs affected are on older BIOS or firmware that could be blocking the update? Maybe the problem isn't the feature update itself but compatibility at the layer below.
