Why do AI meme generators miss the weird context that makes memes land?
#1
I finally caved and used that new AI meme generator everyone's talking about, but my friends just said the image felt "off" and couldn't explain why. It got the format right, but the humor just landed flat and weirdly corporate. Has anyone else found that these tools miss the specific, weird context that makes a meme actually work?

I tried that AI meme generator a while back. The format was fine, but the humor felt off and it came across as oddly corporate, like it was selling a product rather than a joke.

The image usually nails the template but misses the weird context we actually share with friends, so the punchline lands flat despite the setup.

I ran a few quick variants with clear callbacks to our inside jokes and watched the reactions—two people groaned, two chuckled, and I still pulled the plug on most versions.

Is it possible the whole problem isn’t the tone but the idea that memes ride on timing and in group signals that an AI just can’t hear in the room?
