Why do animation inconsistencies pull me out of a story in older shows?
#1
I’ve been rewatching some older series lately and I keep getting thrown off by the jarring shifts in animation quality between episodes. It’s like the characters look amazing one week and then weirdly off-model the next. Has anyone else felt pulled out of the story because of this inconsistency?

Yeah I’ve felt that too. One episode the characters look sharp, the next they look off in obvious places, like the jaw or a smile wasn’t matching. It often seemed like different studios handled different blocks and the contrast was jarring.

I ended up fast forwarding past the rough frames and tried to judge the writing first, but the visuals kept pulling me away from the story.

I actually checked the credits and found a couple of episodes credited to a different studio, which explained the sudden shift. It made me wonder how much of the feel comes from budget and pipeline work versus actual style.

Do you think the inconsistency is the real problem, or could it be something else like pacing, lighting, or how the scenes are cut?
