Why do I experience sudden smell distortion like coffee smelling burnt rubber?
#1
I’ve been having these brief episodes where my sense of smell is suddenly, intensely wrong—like coffee smells like burning rubber. It lasts less than a minute and leaves me feeling a bit spacey afterwards. My doctor mentioned it could be a type of seizure, which is unsettling. Has anyone else experienced this kind of isolated sensory disruption?

I've had something similar a couple times. A smell that used to be coffee suddenly tasted like burnt rubber for about 10 to 20 seconds, then I felt spacey for a moment. It never stuck around long enough to catch on a test, but it freaked me out. I mentioned it to my doctor and they talked about a possible focal seizure or an aura. I ended up getting an EEG and later an MRI; nothing conclusive showed up, and it stopped happening for a while after I started getting more regular sleep.

Once it happened after a bad night of sleep and a long drive. Same quick flip in scent, plus a little dizziness. I wasn’t sure if it was my nose acting up or something bigger. The neurologist considered seizures, but the tests were clean. It faded into the background, though I still worry about it when I’m tired.

I kept a simple log: time of day, what I smelled, how I felt right after. I noticed it sometimes after strong cleaners or when I was stressed, but not every time. It was never a full episode, more like a tiny warning flare. It’s still odd, and I’m not sure what to make of it.

Do you think this is the real issue, or could something else be going on such as migraines or allergies?
