Why do my online comments get misinterpreted so often lately?
#1
I’ve been noticing lately that my online comments seem to get misinterpreted way more often than they used to. I’ll write something I think is pretty clear, but then the replies come in and it’s like people are reading a completely different tone or intent. It makes me wonder if I’m just bad at expressing myself in text now, or if something about how we read each other in these spaces has shifted.

Yeah that started happening to me a while back. I realized I was assuming tone would land the same way in text as in person so I started adding tiny clarifications like joking or serious in the text and I watched how responses shifted. It helped a bit but it did not fix it.

I tried a concrete trick I am comfortable with. I write the comment then step away for a while then read it aloud and only post if it still feels clear. If it does not I rewrite. It cut the number of misunderstandings a little though not a cure.

Could it be not you but the space rewarding fast sharp takes and flattening nuance?

I drifted once into a thread where every reply felt like a heat seeking missile and I forgot to pause before posting. Then I took a break and came back to rethink the tone. It helped a bit but I still feel the same pressure.
