Why do satin wood finishes get tiny scratches after buffing?
#1
I’ve been trying to get a consistent satin finish on my latest woodworking project, but I keep getting these tiny, almost invisible scratches after the final buffing. I’m using a high-quality paste wax and a clean, soft cloth, working in straight lines with the grain. Has anyone else run into this and figured out what step might be causing it?

Yeah I had the same problem on a recent project. Tiny scratches showed up after the final buff. I found dust or fibers from the cloth in the wax were the culprits. I switched to a fresh clean microfiber and used a barely damp pad only with wax. I wiped slowly with the grain and gave it a light pass twice with a clean cloth. It made the lines much less visible though a few still show up if I rush.

I was aiming for a satin finish and noticed the tiny scratches appear more when I buff too soon after applying wax. I tried letting the surface sit a minute before the final wipe and the lines softened a bit. It did not solve all cases but it bought me time to catch dust.

I keep wondering if the problem is the wood more than the wax. On a piece with open pores or tight grain, the wax can catch on tiny ridges and you end up with faint lines after buffing. I tried filling pores with a lighter sanding before finishing and that helped a touch but it did not feel right for the project.

One thing I did not get to try yet is a polishing pad designed for wax and a really clean bench. I am not sure if it will help but my last run I used a cloth that shed fibers and I could feel it when wiping. I stopped and swapped the pad mid process and that changed nothing dramatic but it felt steadier. Do you think the issue might be the cloth or the pad you are using?
