Why do the old Star Wars practical effects feel slow to kids?
#1
I just tried to show my kids the original Star Wars trilogy and they couldn't get past the special effects. They said it looked fake and asked why everything was so "slow." It made me wonder if the magic of those old-school practical effects and model work is completely lost on new audiences.

I tried the original trilogy with my kid and they kept laughing at the ships that look like toys on screen. The models creak and you can see the wire tracks, but the sound design still drew me in.

The magic for me was the craft in the scale models and the lack of fully digital tricks. When you see a tiny ship held up on a wire and a steady shot it feels real in a different way.

Maybe the problem is pace. Back then they let scenes breathe and you filled in the gaps with imagination. Now every cut feels quick and the world seems crowded.

Do you think the real issue is the pace or do the kids expect everything to be polished and fast right from the start?

We tried watching with the lights down and the sound up to feel immersive and it helped a bit but not the reaction we hoped.

One moment you see a tiny crew pull off something clever with a handful of cameras and editing and you stay for the ride rather than the glare.
