Why does it feel like neighbors don't know each other anymore?

I’ve noticed a real shift lately where it feels like nobody knows their neighbors anymore on my street. I used to see people chatting over fences, but now everyone just drives into their garages and closes the door.

Yeah, I remember the fence chats. Now I pull into the garage and see walls. I still wave at neighbors when I see them, hoping for a hello that sticks.

I tried a little block party last summer—grill, lemonade, a couple invitations—and it collapsed into awkward silence. It felt like the mood, not a failure on anyone.

Sometimes I think the issue is wider than our block—phones, streaming, everyone working from home. I was fiddling with a loose mailbox hinge and realized I had no idea who lived two houses over. It felt off, and I moved on.

Could the real problem be that we’re misreading intent and not seeing genuine offers to connect?
