Why does my car's fuel readout differ from my manual calculation?
#1
I’ve been tracking my fuel consumption for a few months now and I’m a bit confused. My car’s trip computer consistently shows a figure that’s about 2 liters per 100 kilometers better than what I calculate manually at the pump. Has anyone else found this kind of discrepancy with their own vehicle’s onboard readout?

Yep, mine did this too for a while. The trip computer would show about 2 L/100 km better than the fuel math I did from pump receipts, and the gap shifted depending on how full the tank was and whether I reset the trip at fill-up.

I wonder if the pump measurement is a little off and the manual tally hides that with rounding. The car’s computer uses sensors and the way it averages you drive can look different from the pour-in numbers.

I chased it for a bit and found it changes with driving style too. Lots of quick stops and A/C on makes the computer’s number drift, while highway cruising tightens the gap.

Do you think the real issue is the car or the method?
