Why does my phone screen dim on its own even with auto-brightness off?

My new phone’s screen keeps going dim while I’m using it, even with auto-brightness turned completely off. I’ve checked all the obvious settings, but it’s really frustrating when I’m trying to read something and it just decides to darken on its own.

I had this on an Android a while back. Even with the brightness up, battery saver would dim the screen when the battery got low.

Could be the blue light filter or night mode sneaking in. Some phones have a schedule that dims the display at certain times even if auto brightness is off.

Maybe it's not the display at all but the app or reading mode I thought it was the screen but the app kept applying a dim overlay.

I tried rebooting and turning off battery saver; it helped for a day, then it came back. Not sure it's a real fix.
