Why does that best original song nominee feel off to me?
#1
I just saw the list of nominees for Best Original Song and honestly, I'm a bit confused by one of the picks. The track from that big summer blockbuster just doesn't feel like it has the emotional weight or narrative integration the category usually rewards. Am I missing something about how the music branch judges these things?

I watched it and felt the same. The track is glossy and big, but it didn’t land with the film’s emotional throughline the way I expect from Best Original Song contenders.

From folks I know who actually vote in the music branch, they look at three things: does the song sit in a scene and advance the moment, does the melody carry the story, and do the lyrics align with a character’s arc. If those don’t line up, it can feel off even if the hook is catchy.

Maybe the problem isn't the song itself but the moment it's asked to function in. A blockbuster might have a heavy moment where the track should land, but if the scene hasn't earned it, the song can feel hollow even if it's well crafted. Am I missing something about the film's context?

I’m not saying I know the rules, but sometimes it seems like the category just rides the hype around a movie. The music can be strong, and still the room feels like it’s judging a different part of the package.
