Why is my 4-year-old bedwetting again after a year of dryness?

My 4-year-old has started wetting the bed again after being dry at night for over a year. We’re back to changing sheets in the middle of the night and I’m just not sure what to make of this sudden regression. There haven’t been any big changes at home, so I’m wondering if other parents have gone through this phase.

We went through this last winter. Dry for over a year, then a few wet mornings. We kept a waterproof mattress cover and extra sheets handy, and just rolled with it. It faded after about two to three weeks and then stayed dry again.

For us it lined up with a minor illness and a few late bedtimes. I started noticing patterns and kept a simple log for two weeks. We tightened up bedtime by 15 minutes for a while and the wet nights stopped.

I asked the pediatrician, and they said lots of kids go through a regression like this and it’s often nothing serious. We checked for constipation and made sure fluid intake wasn’t too close to bed, but mostly we treated it like a phase. It did help to have a calm morning routine and reassurance.

Could it be that the real issue isn’t the wet sheets but sleep quality or stress?
