Why is my ACE inhibitor causing a dry cough?

I’ve been on the same blood pressure medication for years, but lately I’ve been getting a really dry, hacking cough that just won’t go away. My doctor mentioned it could be a side effect of the ACE inhibitor I’m taking, and I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this and what they discussed with their doctor.

I've been on the same blood pressure med for years and started getting a dry, hacking cough that won't quit. My doctor said it can be a side effect of ACE inhibitors, which was a bit of a relief to hear after so long without answers. We talked about possibly switching to a different drug, like an ARB, but we haven't pulled the trigger yet.

I kept a cough diary for a month—notes on meds, allergies, and when the cough showed up hardest. It pointed toward the med as the likely culprit, and the doctor mentioned a trial switch to something like losartan, but we paused to review options and costs.

Have other people here seen quick relief after a switch, or does it take weeks to notice a change?

I tried to power through it, telling myself it would fade, but the cough stuck around. It did make me pause other healthy changes I was trying to make, which felt frustrating, and I still haven't gotten a clear answer from my provider.
