Why is my deep sleep under an hour even with eight hours in bed?

I’ve been tracking my sleep stages and noticed my deep sleep is consistently under an hour, even when I get a full eight hours in bed. I just don’t feel restored in the morning, and I’m wondering if this is something others have managed to improve.

I’ve chased this too. Even when eight hours showed up on the clock, I’d wake up feeling foggy and deep sleep never topped an hour. I tried a stricter 10 pm bedtime, cut caffeine after noon, and cooled the room a bit. A few weeks in, the deep sleep bit perked up maybe 5–10 minutes on some nights, but it wasn’t reliable.

Deep sleep is notoriously variable. Some nights I’d land 60–70 minutes and other nights barely 30, with the same routine. It felt less like a control problem and more like the brain’s own scheduling, which was unnerving.

Maybe the real issue isn’t the deep sleep chunk but the overall sleep quality. I had nights with tiny awakenings or stress, and mornings felt wrecked no matter the hours. Do you also notice daytime naps helping or making it worse?

I did a simple routine: blackout curtains, a cool 65–68F room, and a quick wind-down without screens. Some weeks I woke clearer, some weeks not at all. Not sure if it was the routine or just bad weeks.
