Why is my final coat gritty after varnish, and how can i fix it?

I’ve been trying to get a clean, even finish on this small wooden keepsake box I’m making, but every time I apply the final coat, I end up with a slightly gritty texture. I’m using a brush and letting it cure in a dust-free cabinet, so I’m not sure if it’s my sanding technique between coats or something in the varnish itself.

That gritty feeling after the final coat sounds like dust or fibers got baked into the surface. I ran into it on a tiny keepsake box once and it turned out to be a speck that settled while the coat was still tacky. I started hitting the surface with a tack cloth right after sanding and kept a clean rag handy to wipe any dust off the air with a quick pass before the coat went on.

I'm not sure, but I also wonder if the film isn't flowing out evenly. I did notice when the room had a faint breeze, the coat would drag a bit and gritty bits would linger. Between coats I tried a light sand with 600 grit and a clean cloth, but the final coat still felt gritty in spots.

Could the real problem be the wood itself Maybe the grain is raising slightly and catching the light as gritty Have you tried a test on a scrap first?

I once thought the issue was the varnish until I moved the setup and watched a hair drift in regardless. The change of bench didn’t fix the finish, just the mood in the room. Small keepsake boxes are stubborn like that.
