Why should Ghost in the Shell be on my top sci-fi list?

I'm trying to decide if the original 1995 "Ghost in the Shell" anime movie belongs on my list of the best sci-fi films of all time. The animation and ideas are incredible, but I'm unsure if its slower, more philosophical pace keeps it from standing shoulder-to-shoulder with my other top picks like "Blade Runner" or "The Matrix."

I watched the 1995 Ghost in the Shell years ago and the slow, contemplative pace felt like a meditation on who we are, not just a chase. The animation still looks revelatory—the city, rain, and neon blur together in a way that makes you remember the questions long after the sound design fades. It stuck with me more as a mood and a set of ideas than a thrill ride.

I showed it to a friend who loves nonstop action, and at first they kept pausing, tapping the remote. But after a late night talk about identity and what it means to be human, they admitted it lingered longer than most sci fi they’ve watched.

Is the pace the real issue, or is it that I’m stacking it against films that hit a different nerve with tempo and spectacle?

I keep weighing influence against moment to moment entertainment. It’s easy to tell myself it’s slower, but the visuals and the way ideas echo are still standout, and that kind of imprint matters even if you don’t feel the speed in the moment.
