Why worry about rust on a used Ford F-550 with Quebec registration?

I’m looking at a used 2019 Ford F-550 with a service body that seems perfect for my small contracting business, but the Carfax shows it spent its first two years registered in Quebec. I’ve heard that can mean serious rust issues down the road, even if it looks clean now in Alberta. I’m just not sure if I should walk away or if a really thorough inspection would catch any hidden problems.

That truck looked clean at first, but when a shop lifted it I could see a few pinholes and uneven coating around the frame near the rear. Nothing dramatic, but enough that a pro warned it could spread if the salt kept at it. I walked away rather than gamble.

I wouldn’t trust Carfax or a single photo set for a two year stint in Quebec. I asked the seller for service records and a recent undercarriage shot, then paid a heavy truck mechanic for a full inspection. They looked at frame rails, crossmembers, and body mounts; nothing obvious flagged, but they recommended caution and follow ups.

I drove it and listened for odd sounds, checked the exhaust hangers, and looked with a flashlight under the cab. The undercarriage looked dry enough, but there was some white salt buildup along the frame in the winter sections. It made me think about ongoing maintenance rather than immediate failure.

Is the real issue the registration history or the vehicle's current condition? I keep circling back to that and wonder if chasing a near perfect rig is the problem here.
