Would tiered shipping based on order value reduce cart abandonment?
#1
I’m trying to decide if I should switch my store from a flat-rate shipping model to a tiered system based on order value. I’ve noticed a few customers abandoning carts right at checkout, and I’m wondering if my current flat rate is the issue, especially for people just buying a single low-margin item.

I stuck with flat-rate for years and noticed it bugged single‑item buyers. The upfront shipping charge felt like a surprise on low‑margin items, and I saw a handful of carts abandon right on the shipping step. We tested removing shipping for orders under a certain value, and there was a tiny lift, but not dramatic.

We moved to tiered shipping based on order value last quarter. For some customers it nudged them to add another item to cross the threshold, which helped average order value a bit, but a decent chunk still dropped at checkout when the total climbed. Margins tightened on light, cheap items.

Maybe the real issue isn't the shipping at all. It could be price perception, trust signals on the checkout, or the page loading slow. I mean, shipping shows up late in the funnel; people may already have decided to bail earlier, so the shipping step just confirms it.

Do you have data on cart abandonments by item price? If not, you might be guessing. I tried a tiny 2‑week test and kept only high‑volume items, and the results were inconclusive.
