Affordable solutions for car engine repair under $200 that provide temporary relief

I’m a single dad living in a rural area, and my 2008 Honda Civic just started making a loud knocking sound from the engine bay. I need affordable solutions for car engine repair because my regular mechanic quoted me $2,800 for a rebuild, and that’s more than the car is worth—plus I can’t afford to be without a vehicle for more than a few days with my commute to work and kid’s school run.

I already tried adding a bottle of Lucas Oil Stabilizer, which was about $8 at the auto parts store, and it quieted the knock for maybe 20 minutes before it came back louder. I also swapped in some high-mileage 10W-30 oil and a new filter, but that didn’t help either. Looking online, I’m wondering if it could be a rod bearing issue or maybe something less serious like a loose heat shield? I’m not sure—I’m definitely no mechanic, just trying to avoid a total loss here.

For anyone who’s been in this spot with an older Honda or similar car, what’s the cheapest stopgap repair you’ve used that actually bought you a few extra months or miles? I’m talking under $200 total, including any special tools I’d need to borrow from the auto parts store.

You’re facing a tough situation. Loud knocking can indicate serious problems. I’ve been there too—my old Civic had similar issues. One time, I patched up a noisy engine by tightening loose bolts around the heat shield and other components. I borrowed a socket set from a friend. It only cost me a small amount, but it bought me a few months before I needed a bigger fix. Check for anything that's come loose, it could save you.

Honestly, you might just be delaying the inevitable here. Repairs on a knocking engine can get pricey, and a cheap fix probably won't last long. When I had a similar issue, the cheap patches only worked temporarily; the engine eventually needed serious work. Just be cautious about putting money into something that might not be worth it long-term.

I understand the need for an affordable solution. I once used a product called BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak which helped quiet down my engine noise for a while. It cost around $50 and from my experience, it extended the life of my engine before needing a bigger repair. Still, there was no guarantee. Your best bet is to save for a more long-term solution if possible.
