"affordable winter outfits for college on a $60 budget?"
#1
Hey everyone. I’ve been trying to put together a decent wardrobe for school that actually looks good without emptying my wallet, and I’m hitting a wall. I’m in my first year of college, so I’m on campus five days a week, and the weather here has been all over the place—cold mornings, lukewarm afternoons, and rain that shows up out of nowhere. I’m not trying to look like a fashion influencer, but I’d like to feel put together, you know?

I’ve already tried a few things. Last month I bought a pair of black cargo joggers from H&M for about $25, which I thought would be a solid base for affordable winter outfits for school. They’re comfy, but they’re pretty thin, so I end up layering them with thermal leggings underneath, and that’s when the trouble starts. The combination feels bulky, and I’m constantly tugging at the waistband. I also picked up a cream-colored knit sweater from Target’s clearance rack for $12, and it’s fine, but it pills after one wash—not sure if that matters but it bugs me. My biggest issue is the outer layer. I’ve been rotating between an old denim jacket that’s way too light for December and a puffer that makes me look like a walking sleeping bag. I’m on a student budget, so I’ve got maybe $50 to $60 left to fill a gap, and I’m trying to avoid fast fashion that falls apart in two months. Oh, and I should mention I don’t have access to a car, so thrift store runs are limited to whatever I can carry on the bus.

One thing that’s worked okay is wearing a thick scarf to make a basic hoodie look more intentional, but it’s not a full solution. I see other students in campus who somehow pull off these clean, minimalist looks with wool coats or long cardigans, and I wonder if that’s even possible on my budget. I’ve been scrolling through secondhand apps like Depop, but shipping costs kill the deal half the time. I also tried a DIY trick—sewing patches onto an old military surplus jacket I got for $8 at a flea market—but it ended up looking a bit too “costume” for class, plus the wool lining is scratchy. Honestly, I’m starting to think I overcomplicate things. Maybe I just need a solid, affordable puffer or a well-fitted fleece that can handle the rain? Or is there a layering hack I’m missing?

What’s worked for you guys when you’re trying to stay warm and look decent without spending a ton? I’d love to hear specific brands or pieces under $30 that actually last. And if anyone has tips for making a cheap outfit look more expensive—like how to style a basic hoodie or sweatshirt differently for school—please drop them here. I’m taking notes.

Staying warm on a budget can feel like a juggling act. I remember struggling with layering too, especially since it gets chilly on campus. One solution I found was getting a good-quality fleece jacket from Uniqlo for about $39. It’s lightweight but surprisingly warm without the bulk—definitely worth the investment. Plus, it has a more polished look compared to other options. It layers well under a slightly oversized coat or even just over a hoodie.

Another trick is to focus on accessories. A pair of nice boots can instantly elevate your outfit, keeping you warm and stylish. I found some cute, durable ankle boots at Old Navy for around $30 that I wear constantly. They’re great for rain and add a small touch of sophistication to any ensemble. Just remember that sometimes, less is more, and it's about finding those staple pieces that mix and match well.
