Does dietary cholesterol from shrimp and eggs actually affect LDL?
#1
I’ve been trying to eat more whole foods for my heart, but I’m honestly confused about the cholesterol in things like shrimp and eggs. My last blood test showed my LDL was a bit high, and now I’m second-guessing every meal, wondering if the dietary cholesterol in these foods is actually impacting my numbers or if that’s an outdated concern.

I went through something similar last year. I kept chasing big changes and learned that dietary cholesterol doesn't map cleanly to LDL for most people, and my numbers bounced around even after I swapped in more whole foods. It helped to loosen the rules I followed for a while and just focus on fiber, fruit, and fish, but I still worry every time I see a new test.

One thing that helped me was keeping a simple food log for a few weeks and asking my clinician to look at the whole lipid panel instead of fixating on one number. I swapped out some processed snacks for beans, oats, and leafy greens, and my energy stayed steadier even when I still enjoyed shrimp or eggs occasionally.

I tried to cut shrimp entirely, then eased back when I noticed it was hard to eat enough protein without feeling restricted. I still eat it sometimes because it fits with meals I actually make, not just what I think I should eat.

Sometimes I wonder if the real issue is stress or sleep or genetics; I end up reading labels and thinking this must be the thing. Then I remind myself nutrition is a broader puzzle. Could stress or sleep be the bigger driver than the foods?
