How can i add dynamic energy to my figure drawing without losing accuracy?

I’ve been trying to improve my figure drawing by working from life, but I keep running into the same issue where my sketches look stiff and unnatural. I focus so hard on getting the proportions right that I lose any sense of flow or movement. How do you capture that dynamic energy in a pose without sacrificing accuracy?

I used to freeze up whenever I started chasing exact measurements. So I began sessions with a single loose gesture line that tried to read the fall of the spine and the overall balance. The energy showed up when that line could breathe before I started building shapes.

There was a stretch where I kept checking proportions and every drawing felt stiff. I switched to sketching fast first, then tweaking later. It still isn’t perfect, but the flow tends to survive the rough pass.

One time I trusted weight and gravity more than the anatomy. If the hip dropped with the torso, the rest followed, and the pose looked alive even if a knee was off. It felt like saving the rhythm rather than chasing perfect lines.

Maybe the real problem isn’t energy at all but how you compare to the reference. Do you think the issue is really about noticing rhythm rather than nailing anatomy?
