How can I apply gestalt continuity to create flowing layouts?
#1
I’ve been trying to improve my layout compositions, but I keep running into the same issue where my designs feel static and disconnected. I read about the Gestalt principle of continuity and how it can guide a viewer’s eye, but when I try to apply it, my elements just end up looking awkwardly aligned instead of creating a natural flow.

I know that feeling I had the same issue where it looked balanced but flat I started by thinking about a single rhythm If I could feel a quiet beat running through the layout the eye would move more naturally I tested by drawing faint guides with a pencil and then removed them to see if the flow remained

Maybe the real issue is not the gap or the line but how you choose elements The eye can care more about contrast and hierarchy than about a gentle curve The Gestalt idea of grouping helps but rhythm might come from color or scale more than edge alignment Do you feel the problem is really about alignment or about how you choose a focal point?

Last week I tried a small exercise I used two images and a block of text I moved them until a diagonal line traced through them It did not feel perfect but the path it created helped the page breathe I checked distances with a simple ruler on the screen and kept the gaps consistent

I once got stuck on a grid obsession and ended up over aligning frames Then I stepped back and sketched the composition free hand for a moment It reminded me that the eye loves a little stray here and there and then a gentle return to the main element After that I revisited the continuity idea and tried to let the main element lead the way
