How can I balance a multi-page editorial layout using the rule of thirds?
#1
I’ve been trying to improve my layout work for editorial projects, but I keep running into the same issue where my pages feel either too crowded or weirdly empty. I know the rule of thirds is a starting point, but when I apply it to a multi-page spread with text blocks and images, the whole composition just feels off balance and static.

I fought the same problem for months. I kept chasing grids, then printed a few spreads and laid them on a light table. It showed me I was cramming too many images into some pages and leaving others too empty. I trimmed image sizes, used a simple two tier grid, and focused on vertical rhythm. The pages started to breathe, but not perfectly.

Could the real issue be rhythm and pacing between text blocks and images, not balance?

In the end I started thinking about layout as a system: a fixed baseline, a cap on how many blocks per spread, and a max text column width so lines don’t sprint off. It wasn’t perfect, but the constraint helped.

Sometimes I drifted into typography stuff or margins and forgot the page mood, then came back with fresh eyes. A quick pencil sketch on scrap paper reminded me what I was supposed to guide the reader toward.
