How can I be a respectful ally for indigenous self-determination?
#1
I’ve been trying to understand how to actually support the principle of self-determination for indigenous communities near me, but it feels overwhelming. I see their legal battles for land rights and governance, and I want to be an ally, but I’m unsure where to start without overstepping or being performative.

I showed up to a regional consultation and realized I had to shut up and listen, not speak for them. When I asked what would actually help, they named funding for community-led priorities and respect for consent. It felt clunky and unsatisfying, but real.

I tried volunteering for a fundraiser for a language preservation program, but I kept stepping on toes. The group asked me to support financially and to follow their lead, not run the show.

Sometimes I wonder if the bigger problem isn't the land battles themselves but how outsiders frame self-determination as a project or checklist. Maybe the real work is learning to unlearn old habits.

One time I drafted a land acknowledgment for a meeting, then a local elder told me it's not my place to speak for the land. I paused, asked questions, and walked away with a different kind of humility, even if I’m not sure what comes next.
