How can I break out of a music rut and discover new albums?
#1
I just realized I’ve been listening to the same three albums on repeat for months, and it’s starting to feel like my musical taste has completely stalled. I’m stuck in a rut and can’t seem to find anything new that clicks, even though I know there’s so much out there. Has anyone else hit a wall like this and found a way to break out of it?

I’ve been there. A while back I did a 'forced variety' experiment: I wrote down what specifically I liked about each of my staples, then looked for artists who shared those threads. I ended up with a short playlist of new names and a couple of tracks that stuck, but it wasn’t a magic fix, just a nudge.

I tried to soak in as many new releases as possible for a stretch—around 10 albums a week, mostly glance and forget. A few tracks stood out, most didn’t, but that one or two sparks kept me going. I still drifted back to the old three, though.

I even started hanging out in smaller venues and listening rooms, just to hear people who care about little details. I rearranged my living room, moved a lamp, cleared a corner for a tiny listening spot, and burned a candle while I hit shuffle. The ritual didn’t rewrite my taste, but it made it easier to notice oddball things when they showed up in the queue.

Maybe try framing it as a mood test rather than a discovery quest. Do you actually want to hunt for new sounds, or is the urge to break routine the real itch?
