How can i check my blind spot effectively without losing focus on the road?

I was merging onto the highway yesterday and my mirror was clear, but when I started to change lanes I had a car right in my blind spot that I never saw. It really shook me up. How do you all manage to check that area effectively without taking your eyes off the road ahead for too long?

I do a quick shoulder check after signaling, then a half-second glance toward the side window. I keep looking ahead and only dip my eyes into the side area long enough to confirm nothing's there before I move.

Sometimes I rely on the mirrors and end up surprised anyway. I started adjusting the side mirrors so the edge of the car isn't disappearing, and I try to lift my eyes back to the road as soon as I can.

Do you think the real issue is the blind spot itself, or are other drivers just not signaling or staying where they should?

There was a time I rushed in because I felt fine and then got surprised. After that I started taking a second to breathe, count to three, and check before switching lanes, even if it feels silly. It helped a little, but not every time.
