How can i color match interview and b-roll in DaVinci Resolve?
#1
I’ve been trying to get better at matching the color and feel between my B-roll and my interview footage, but I keep getting this weird mismatch where the interview looks warm and the cutaways feel cold and flat. I’m grading everything in DaVinci Resolve using the same node tree, but something about the different lighting conditions on set is throwing me off.

I hear you. That warm interview and cold cutaway mismatch is a classic color problem, especially when on set lighting tilts warm while windows pull in daylight. In Resolve I learned that just nailing white balance isn't always enough; you may need a single, shared grade reference across shots, then nudge midtones and shadows so the two feel closer. A tiny warmth lift on the B-roll can help if it looks too flat.

I tried the same node tree across everything and still saw it. We ended up grading the interview first, then the B-roll on a separate pass, and only then bringing the two together with a final balance bump.

It might not be the grade at all. Our set had a hard backlight that gave the interview a glow while the B-roll was darker and contrasty from windows. I started thinking the problem was light shaping or lens contrast, not the grade.

I once thought the issue was the LUT, but the midtones were just punching differently. I ran a quick check, histogram looked uneven on a couple clips, so I backed off on the aggressive lift and kept it tame.
