How can I create depth in a short film with a single camera and natural light?

I’ve been trying to get better at creating a sense of depth in my short films, but I’m struggling to make my wide shots feel truly immersive without resorting to expensive gear. My latest attempt just looks flat, like the background is glued to the actors. How do you all approach building that layered look, especially when you’re working with a single camera and natural light?

i tried this on a recent shoot with a single camera and natural light i moved the actor a few steps away from the wall and kept a foreground element like a plant in frame then i underexposed the background a touch and let the light carve the edges the result hinted at depth

we did a quick test using a doorway as a framing cue the foreground edge kept a chair or crate so the eye travels from foreground to mid to background and we nudged the iso to soften the back and give a little grain it felt livelier even with cheap gear

i also thought the problem might be the light direction the sun came from the side which created separation but the layers never sat together the actors looked glued to the wall and we shelved the idea for a bit

do you think the issue is really about space or is the bigger snag the blocking and movement that sells it
