How can I deal with retinoid causing flaking around my mouth?
#1
I’ve been using a topical retinoid for about three months now, and while the fine lines on my forehead are less noticeable, the skin around my mouth and chin is constantly flaking and feels tight no matter how much moisturizer I use. I’m not sure if this is just a normal part of the retinization process that will eventually settle down, or if it means the product is too strong for those specific areas.

I started a topical retinoid about three months ago and the lines on my forehead did improve, but the skin around my mouth and chin started flaking and felt tight no matter how much moisturizer I used. I backed off on the product for that area—every third night instead of every night—and I layered a thick ceramide moisturizer on top while the skin was still damp. It took a couple of weeks, but the flaking calmed down a bit. Not perfect, but bearable.

That area is extra delicate, the mouth corners move a lot, and it can become a stress point for dryness. If it’s still flaky, consider reducing frequency, applying a smaller amount, and using a fragrance-free, heavy moisturizer or barrier cream after the product. If there are fissures or cracking, stop using it around the mouth and talk to a dermatologist.

I kept the same cream elsewhere but swapped in a gentler cleanser and a hydrating night cream around the mouth area. The flaking eased slowly over a few weeks, though it never vanished completely. It felt like barrier repair plus less product exposure helped more than anything else.

One time I blamed toothpaste or winter air for the dryness, tried a plain toothpaste and a simple lip balm, and kept scented products out for a bit. It helped a touch but didn’t fix it. Do you think there is a real underlying issue here, or is this just stubborn dryness from the treatment?
