How can I develop a distinctive visual voice as a freelance illustrator?
#1
I’ve been a freelance illustrator for about three years, and I’m starting to feel stuck because my portfolio looks like everyone else’s. I see the same popular styles and subjects repeated everywhere, and my own work just blends in. How do you figure out what makes your visual voice distinct when you’re surrounded by so much similar inspiration online?

I felt stuck similar to you a while back. I chased trends and ended up painting the same scenes as everyone else. Then I kept a tiny notebook of things I actually cared about not what sold. I drew a single character in four moods and tried a messy palette. That began to feel like my own visual voice.

I started keeping quick sketches in a notebook every week with three ideas that really grabbed me and I forced myself to mash them with my current style. It was rough but after a couple of cycles there was a line that felt less generic.

Sometimes I wonder if the real snag is how I show the work. I moved some pieces around the portfolio and dropped a few that felt safe, and it slowed me down more than it helped.

I tried a big deviation for a project and it fell flat with the client mix which was frustrating but I kept going and learned what not to chase. Not sure if it fixes the problem.
