How can I dial in my gravel bike weight distribution on steep descents?
#1
I’ve been trying to dial in my riding position on my new gravel bike, but I can’t seem to get my weight distribution right on steeper, loose descents. I feel like I’m either too far back and losing steering control, or too far over the front and fighting to keep the front wheel from washing out.

I’ve been there. On a steep loose descent I kept drifting back and the front would lift, then I’d jam the bars and ride it out. On my gravel bike I started paying attention to where my weight actually sat instead of where I thought it was, and the front felt a hair more settled. Not perfect, but it helped a bit.

I tried staying looser and letting the bike do its thing, and sometimes the rear settled while the front wandered, other times it was the opposite. It’s wild how a tiny shift in stance can change the line in real time.

A few rides I nudged the saddle aft and tried to stay over the pedals, thinking hips first. The result swung between control and panic depending on the gravel patches. It taught me not to overcorrect.

Maybe the issue isn’t the weight so much as the surface and line. I kept blaming my stance, but the ride felt sketchy where the ruts meet the loose. Do you notice the washout more with certain patches?
