How can I draw realistic fabric folds without stiff lines?

I’ve been trying to get better at drawing folds in fabric, like on a draped cloth or clothing, but my attempts just look stiff and unnatural. I’m not sure how to approach the soft, flowing transitions without making it look like a bunch of random lines.

Ive been at it for a while. I did a quick life study of a shirt on a hanger, tried drawing one long smooth curve for the main fold and then a few softer notes around it. It still looked stiff at first, but I started feeling the rhythm in the lines more than the shapes.

Sometimes I worry the problem isn’t the lines at all but how I place them. If I go too eager with every little crease, it turns into a grid; I’ll pause and stare at a sleeve as if listening to wind, then I come back and try leaving gaps. I drew a forearm sleeve and left space for air; it helped a touch.

I experimented with weight in my sketchbook—heavy pencil for the big sweep, light for the tiny hints—and the big crease finally read as a fold, not a crease trap. Still, near the elbow it goes stiff, like the fabric ran out of space to fall.

Do you think the real issue is the pose or the fabric itself?
