How can i feel emotionally connected to modern jazz beyond mere appreciation?

I’ve been trying to get into more modern jazz lately, but I keep hitting a wall where everything just sounds like pleasant background music to me. I put on a record that’s supposed to be groundbreaking, and I can appreciate the technical skill, but it doesn’t really grab me or make me feel anything. Has anyone else struggled with this gap between knowing something is good and actually connecting with it emotionally?

Yeah I hit that wall too. The skill is clear, the emotion not so much. I started honing in on tiny things—the drummer’s pocket, a bass walk, a horn lick that tilts and then breaks—and sometimes that micro moment wakes me up, but it’s rare.

I gave a groundbreaking record three full listens with different expectations, and I still felt like I was tasting the garnish rather than the meal.

There was a live set in a small club where the band was fumbling through ideas and the room hummed with risk. The energy came from people in front of me, not the studio slickness. I went back to the album and it hit differently—in a way I didn’t trust.

What do you think is the real driver behind the disconnect—the music itself or the way we listen?
