How can i find a trustworthy independent mechanic near me?
#1
I’m trying to find a good local mechanic I can actually trust, but every time I ask around I just get a shrug or a vague recommendation for some big chain. I had a bad experience last year with a place that overcharged for simple work, and now I’m just stuck wondering how people find a reliable independent shop these days.

Yeah, I hear you. A neighbor swore by a local shop, but the first bill came with surprise charges and the owner wouldn’t explain them. Now I look for a place that will put everything in writing before they touch the car and won’t dodge questions.

I tried an indie that sounded solid, they ran a quick diagnostic and quoted something fair. Then they called back saying they found extra issues and the price doubled. I walked away, kept chasing a cheaper quote, and tried a big chain instead, which was more transparent but still not cheap. Not sure if that helped.

Is it really the shop, or am I chasing the wrong problem—maybe I just need a car with fewer annoyances?

I started keeping a little car diary—notes about noises and what got fixed—and even tried a tiny DIY thing once, which made things worse for a week. When I showed the diary to a mechanic, they respected that I cared and it didn’t lead to a fight over blame. It helped, but it didn’t fix trust issues.
