How can I find good foreign films on streaming without it feeling like a chore?

I’ve been trying to watch more foreign films on the streaming services I already pay for, but I keep getting overwhelmed by the options and end up defaulting to something in English. How do you actually find the good stuff without it feeling like a chore?

I did this too, split the options into two buckets in my head: films with subtitles and stuff in English. Then I scanned my streaming lists and grabbed two or three titles from countries I actually care about, just to test the waters. I gave each about 15 minutes and made a quick note: hook or nope, move on.

I keep a tiny weekly ritual: one foreign film, under 90 minutes, no more than two per week. If the first 20 minutes don’t land, I bail and move on. It’s boring but it stops me from overthinking it.

Is the problem really the catalog, or am I chasing comfort with familiar pacing and subtitles? Sometimes I worry I’m chasing the subtitle more than the story.

I tried a director-first approach: pick one filmmaker, watch their films back-to-back until I either catch a vibe or burn out. Sometimes two out of three click, sometimes I bail after the first film and reset. It’s messy but it’s something I can stick to.
