How can I fix bare lawn patches from compacted soil?
#1
I’ve been trying to get my lawn to look thick and green, but no matter what I do, there are always these thin, bare patches that won’t fill in. I’ve tried overseeding a couple of times in the spring and fall, but the new grass seems to struggle to establish before it either gets too hot or the first frost hits. I’m wondering if my soil is just too compacted in those spots for the seeds to really take hold.

I've got patches like that too. Overseeding in spring and fall never seemed to fully fill in before heat or frost.

A lot of my patch attempts stalled because the seed just couldn't get good seed-to-soil contact in the compacted spots.

I did rent a core aerator once and pulled plugs, then spread seed again and watered carefully. Some spots finally greened up, but it wasn't a big change overall.

I wonder if mine was more about drainage or the ground type than just compaction. In my yard the water pools in those patches after rain.

I also tried top dressing with a thin layer of compost last autumn and watched the new grass come in slower but thicker where I added organic matter.

Maybe the real problem isn't compaction but shade or sun exposure or the lawn variety, the patch might just be a different grass that doesn't like your weather.

Do you have heavy traffic on that patch or dogs digging?
