How can I fix port forwarding on my home router?
#1
I just tried to set up a new router and I think I messed up the port forwarding for my home server. I entered the internal IP and the port numbers, but it's still not accessible from outside my network. The whole process of configuring these rules feels like I'm missing a basic step.

Yeah I did a similar thing last year when I tried to open a server from outside and nothing came back It felt like I was missing a small step and I kept chasing logs instead of fixing the real setup

In my case the public IP changed and the rule looked fine on the inside I solved it with a dynamic DNS setup so the address stayed stable

The server itself was listening on the right port but the firewall on the host blocked traffic I opened a quick exception and still nothing until I rebooted the router

The router sometimes needs a port forward rule to be enabled and sometimes the inbound filter blocks everything by default I found mine off by default then it started to work after a reboot

Is it possible the real issue is the service not binding to all interfaces not just localhost I found mine only listened on 127 0 0 1 and moving it to listen on all interfaces fixed it for a while

Another thought I had was that a conflicting rule or a wrong internal IP would make the port feel unreachable even if the forward was set correctly I kept double checking the digits and still doubted the setup
