How can i fully remove my old online identity after a data breach?
#1
I’ve been trying to scrub my old usernames from the web and hit a wall. Even after deleting accounts, some forums and archive sites still show my posts with that pseudonym, linking it back to my real name through a data breach. Is it basically impossible to fully disconnect an old online identity once it’s been tied to you?

I’ve tried a few times and learned the hard way that you can scrub some, but the web loves copies. Delete buttons hide it from you, but caches and mirrors keep the ghost alive.

I cleared accounts, asked admins to remove posts, and a few finally got taken down. Others just vanished for me but popped up again under a different domain later.

Maybe the bigger problem isn’t the username at all but the data trail from breaches and shared metadata. If someone has your name and a few old details, they can link you anyway, even after you delete the posts, right?

I’ve also learned to limit what I post in the first place, but it’s maddening when a site crawls your profile into search results.

One time I tried to contact a forum and they said they delete user data but keep a short bio during archival. That felt contradictory.

It’s rough to admit, but I’ve started to treat some old accounts as a sunk cost and focus on building new, safer habits instead of chasing every copy down the river.
