How can I get a clean, upfront pop vocal without the room sound creeping in?

I’m trying to get a really clean, upfront vocal sound for a pop track, but every time I record, it feels like it’s sitting a bit too far back in the mix. I’ve experimented with different mics and preamps, but I’m wondering if my issue is more about the space itself. My room is treated with basic panels, but I can’t tell if what I’m hearing is a lack of true isolation or just the natural ambience of the room.

I’ve chased this too. Even with panels, the room isn’t silent. I found bringing the mic in closer and using a tighter cardioid helped the vocal sit more upfront, but it still didn’t feel glued to the take.

I tried hanging a thick curtain on the back wall and nudging the singer away from parallel surfaces. That softened some early reflections and let the vocal breathe a little more in the mix.

Could it be that the real issue isn’t the space at all but how the vocal sits in the arrangement? In some mixes I’ve done, a touch more presence in the vocal chain made it pop without clobbering the music; in others the room sounded fine solo but buried in the full track.

I did a quick A B: dry vocal in the treated room vs the same in a small untreated closet. The closet version felt louder and more in-your-face, so I kept that session but kept reverbs lean and used a light bus compressor. It was enough to be confident enough to go again.
