How can I get a new car insurance policy after a lapse and cancellation?

I just got a notice that my car insurance is being cancelled because of a lapse in my prior coverage. I thought the gap was only a couple of weeks between jobs, but the insurer says it was 45 days. I’m not sure how this even happened or what my options are now for getting a new policy.

I did a quick round of quotes online and found some carriers willing to start fresh but the premiums were noticeably higher.

I tried calling the old company to see if they would reinstate with some back payments but they would not bite I ended up moving on.

A coworker suggested maybe you can get a policy with a non standard insurer to bridge the gap I did not try it myself.
