How can i get my 6-year-old to brush teeth for 2 minutes without tears?

My six-year-old has started refusing to brush his teeth, turning it into a full-blown power struggle every single night. I’ve tried making it a game and letting him pick his own toothbrush, but the real challenge is getting him to do a thorough job for the full two minutes without it ending in tears.

We went through the same thing last winter. I bought a goofy hourglass timer and we sang a short brushing song. We split the two minutes into 30-second chunks for different areas. It helped for a couple of weeks, and then a few nights it just fell apart again.

Sticker chart helped for a stretch too. He earned a sticker after two minutes of actually brushing, not just rubbing at the teeth. The novelty wore off after a week, and we were back to square one.

Is this really about the teeth or the bedtime mood? Sometimes I wonder if the main problem is the whole routine feeling like a trap.

On the rough nights I just lower expectations, rinse with water, and call it a win for the day. Not ideal, but fewer tears and we try again tomorrow.
