How can I get neighbors mingling at a casual board game night?
#1
I’m trying to organize a casual board game night at my apartment for neighbors I’ve only met in passing, but I’m worried it might be awkward if people don’t really mingle. How do you create a relaxed atmosphere where folks actually connect instead of just playing the game in silence?

We did a quick hello circle and asked everyone to share a snack they’d bring; it loosened things up and gave us easy topics.

I tried a big icebreaker and it felt forced; after the first game we barely spoke.

I printed name tags and set a tiny prompt card at each seat asking for a favorite game memory.

Maybe the problem isn’t mingling at all; maybe people are just tired or shy, and I’m assuming it’s on me to fix it.

I kept thinking about the layout and the playlist, but the night felt better when someone sat next to a neighbor who didn’t know anyone.

We wrapped a round with a five minute chat between rounds; a few people stuck around longer than the game.

From a social-psych angle, energy tends to be contagious, so a light moderator who switches topics between games can help without turning it into a talk show.
