How can I get smoother Cessna 172 landings and stop floating on final?

I’ve been flying the Cessna 172 for about a year now, and I’m really struggling to get my landings consistently smooth. No matter how much I try to nail the sight picture and airspeed on final, I still seem to either float too long or plant it firmly.

I’ve been there. I found that chasing a perfect sight picture all the way to the runway makes me rush the flare. What helped was treating the round-out and flare as two separate micro-maneuvers: keep a steady descent rate until about chest height, then ease the controls rather than yanking back. It didn’t fix it overnight, but it reduced the twitchiness for me.

I started timing my flare and noted the float duration on three landings in a row. When I cut power a touch earlier and began the flare slightly sooner, the float shortened by a second or so. It wasn’t magical, but I could see the trend in the notebook I kept.

Do you have a trusted instructor or someone who can watch you from the ground or in the pattern? I found an outside pair of eyes helps me see where I’m getting late or early on the flare.

I drifted for a while on this and began to wonder if the real problem was the approach energy window rather than the final. I tried staying with the same pitch rate through the last bit of the approach and loosened the ground roll, which helped a little, but I still don't feel settled.
