How can I handle dominating members in my hobby forum without stifling others?
#1
I’ve been running a small hobby forum for a few years, and lately I’m struggling with how to handle a handful of members who dominate every single discussion. Their posts are on-topic, but it feels like they’re crowding out quieter voices, and I’m not sure if I should step in or just let the community self-regulate.

Yeah I see that too. A couple members talk a lot and it feels like quieter folks end up in the corners. Some threads just become their monologue and others fade away.

I’ve tried pulling someone aside privately to level with them, but that felt awkward and the thread kept going the same way. I’m not sure if I should step in or let it ride.

For a while I kept track of post counts in a few threads and noticed the big players stayed active from opening to close, while newcomers would chime in with a good point and disappear. It makes me wonder if the issue is timing, not intent.

Sometimes I wonder if the site stuff like notifications or how we highlight new replies is part of the problem. I drifted into some off topic thoughts and then came back to the same point: maybe the real issue isn’t crowding but something else like how topics are chosen or when people see them. Do you think that could be the real problem?
